CBD for Dogs

CBD oil and treats have recently grown in popularity among the dog community, especially with those who have dogs with anxiety and health issues. There is a lot of information out their about CBD treats and oil and can get pretty overwhelming, so our team has spent time digging deep and found the most important things you need to know, but we still encourage that you do a bit more research to find out what fits for you and your dog.

What is CBD?

CBD is found in hemp and should not contain delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol or THC which is found in marijuana and causes the "hi" effect. CBD should be derived from hemp and never marijuana.

What is CBD used for?

While we found there are still studies happening in regards to the variety of uses with CBD and dogs there are some things studies have observed. Dogs have an endocannabinoid system which is a cellular process in the body that regulates pain, stress, inflammation, etc., just like humans. CBD can help enhance and work with this system in your dog's body and can also decrease cancer cell production.

From tests and studies so far they found that CBD can help with:

  • Allergies

  • Anxiety/Fear

  • Digestive Issues

  • Arthritis/Joint Pain

  • Cancer/Tumors

  • Skin Irritations

  • Seizures/Epilepsy

  • Inflammation

  • Eye Sight

  • Muscle Spams

Potential Effects of CBD

While we couldn't find any life threatening notabilities on using CBD with dogs we did find some potential side effects your dog can have when using it such as drowsiness and lack of energy or alertness. Each reaction your dog may have can depend on the dosage they receive and the form, be it a treat or an oil, so be sure to research each product you might want to try thoroughly before giving it to your dog.

ALWAYS talk to your vet before using CBD to make sure your educated further on the correct dosage for your dog and maybe even bring in some CBD products your thinking of trying and get their opinion on them.

Choosing CBD that works for you & your dog!

  • Choose CBD products that are only organic. While CBD oil isn't really organic it should not contain any solvents, pesticides, toxic substances, herbicides, or fungicides.

  • Don't go for the cheapest option out there. Cheaper CBD options will most likely have more impurities and harm your dog.

  • Research the product. The manufacturers should provide a sheet or certificate explaining what their CBD product does and how much to give for your specific dog, and there should be no traces of THC in the product.

Who we use & why!

CBD is something I have wanted to use on my dogs but never really knew much about it. My dog Lenox has had arthritis in his elbows since he was 7, he is now 11, which was due to living a very active life on the trails and had slowly been wearing away his cartilage in his joints. After visiting the vet and trying to treat him that way as well as changing up his diet to wheat and grain free it worked for awhile but the pills prescribed could have effects on his liver so I chose to stop treatment and did swim therapy, which has helped some but not enough.

We recently got to try out RX Remedies CBD Joint Health Treats. I had been researching CBD but had no idea which to choose because there are so many different product out there. After researching RX Remedies I decided to give it a try! Both my dogs have been on their treats for almost a full month and I have already noticed a massive difference. Lenox still has a slight limp after he has been laying down too long but it goes away after a few minutes which it hadn't done in the past and he has a lot more mobility and movement when we hike. I no longer have to help him up little boulders, he's been able to climb up on his own again.

The treats are USDA grade, beef based with organic hemp derived CBD designed to help with joint pain and inflammation. You get 20 treats per bag with a certificate of their product stating how to use it and the benefits it can have on your dog. To start off, Lenox got half a treat for the first week to get him used to it and then to the full dose of 1 treat a day.

The ingredients are simple too: Organic CBD, glucosamine, chondroitin, willow bark (reduces inflammation) , CoQ10 (a compound that helps generate energy in cells), beef trachea, egg powder, psyllium seed husks (helps with digestive issues), zinc (immune system supporter), calcium propionate, and mineral oil (helps with digestive issues).

Rx Remedies also has CBD treats designed for dogs who have anxiety as well as the option to get CBD oil and have a more controlled dosage for your dog. If your like me and don't entirely know where to start with CBD I would recommend these treats. They are very educational on how to introduce your dog to CBD and continuing to use it to benefit your dog and give them a better life.
